PRESS INFORMATION - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOUTH AFRICAN CARP TEAM SCORES WORLD FIRST –
WINS WORLD CARP CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR!

The South African Carp Team has won both the Team and Individual gold medals at the 2009 Carp Angling World Championships staged at Lac de I’Uby in France on 23-25 October.

The South African Protea team, despite being the current world champions, was not rated amongst the favourites of the 21 participating countries, but they once again stunned the competition carp angling world by successfully defending their title with a runaway win, weighing 171.32kg during the 72-hour competition, well ahead of second place Serbia with only 100.51kg.

The South African peg pair of Hennie du Preez and Andries Maree, bronze winners last year, took gold and are this year’s new individual World Champions, while last year’s individual champion pair, GP Nel and Kobus van Loggerenberg, also won their sector to take Bronze. The current South African Champions Loutjie Louwies and Gilbert Foxcroft achieved a good third in their sector. Overall South Africa scored only 5 penalty points with Serbia and France coming in with 13 and 15 for silver and bronze respectively.
“Our success is attributed to thorough and detailed preparation, an excellent game plan and the most professional team I have ever worked with!” said Protea team manager Johan Donald.

*The team arrives at OR Tambo on Wednesday morning at 06:45 and will be welcomed back by a crowd of supporters.

**Last year the South African team won the 2008 Championships on home soil at Bloemhof Dam, also winning Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Team and Individual sections, making history and adding several world records.

PERS INLIGTING – VIR ONMIDDELIKE VRYSTELLING

SUID - AFRIKAANSE KARPHENGELSPAN VEROWER ‘N WÊRELD EERSTE-
